  • Fort Myers unveiled a memorial plaque today at City Hall to honor 72 lives lost during Hurricane Ian as local siblings Violet and Paul Schwartz led the effort with Canterbury School students after three years of planning—Mayor Kevin Anderson said the tribute reminds citizens to prepare for hurricane season.  ABC7
  • Today at Fort Myers City Hall, the community unveiled a plaque honoring over 140 lives lost to Hurricane Ian; the twins Paul & Violet Schwartz led the project & coordinated community efforts as they marked the storm's third anniversary.  WINK News
  • Sanibel Harbour Yacht Club reopened in April 2023 as a sign of recovery following Hurricane Ian’s 2022 devastation — which destroyed every dock and boat launch, and manager Adrian Boneta said the club stays committed to preparedness for boat owners.  WINK News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Arts for ACT Gallery in downtown Fort Myers has supported local artists and helped survivors by using art sales to fund Abuse Counseling and Treatment services—monthly meet and greets share these vital resources with the community. The gallery will hold its Arts for ACT Auction, All Jazzed Up, on Nov. 8 at the Burroughs Home to raise further awareness and funds.  Florida Weekly
  • Fort Myers Beach's Island Hopper Songwriter Fest shows the Gulf Coast community's strong spirit amid heavy winds and rain during peak hurricane season. The festival's final day will take place Sunday – organizers say its timing boosts local hotels and restaurants.  ABC7
  • Bay Street Yard (located at 2136 Bay St. in downtown Fort Myers) will host the Ben Allen Band on October 11th at 6 p.m., where the band will play country hits and original songs until 9 p.m. Tickets cost $10.65 and are available at the door.  Florida Weekly

  • Historic newspaper front pages show the devastation of Hurricane Ian on Sept. 28 — the storm brought up to 15 feet of surge and heavily impacted Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel and Pine Island, where recovery efforts remain ongoing three years later.  The News-Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • South Seas Resort on Captiva Island hosted its annual triathlon on September 28—marking its recovery three years after Hurricane Ian as over 350 participants joined the event. Resort official Wendy Nicodemus said upgrades including a 12-foot wall and rebuilt docks are planned with a new restaurant opening tomorrow.  ABC7
