GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • San Carlos Park Fire District opened Station 55, a new 7600 square foot fire station built to withstand hurricanes and house three full-time firefighters on Oak Center Lane — a facility designed to reduce response times to about six minutes as local growth increases calls for service. Fire Chief David Cambareri said the project, which was planned over four years, aims to support the demand in high-traffic areas like Gulf Coast Town Center.  WINK News
  • Sen. Don Gaetz has drafted a bill that will protect state workers, contractors, and whistleblowers from retaliation when reporting ethics violations in state government. • Fort Myers Fire Department reminds residents to avoid overcharging lithium-ion batteries and to recycle them through certified drop-off sites as part of National Fire Prevention Month. The department also promotes its Community Connect program and will launch a Citizens Academy in spring 2026—efforts aimed at strengthening emergency response across the city.  Florida Weekly
  • The federal shutdown that began Oct 1 is causing Florida air travel issues as 11,000 FAA workers are furloughed—over 60,000 TSA staff and air traffic controllers work without pay, which may lead to flight delays at airports like Fort Myers. The travel economy may lose up to $1 billion per week if the disruptions continue.  The News-Press
  • Due to a technical glitch, LeeWay is waiving administrative fees for some SunPass customers with past-due toll bills from May, June, and July; the waiver may not show on online toll bills until Oct. 6—customers with a Toll Due Notice should use the quick-pay option or call for a refund if needed.  Fox 4
