- ➤ Community Cooperative is launching its Hunger is Scary campaign this October in Southwest Florida to raise awareness about food insecurity and collect donations to feed local families in need — the group urges businesses, schools and individuals to host food drives, donate nonperishable items or contribute financially. - ➤ Seventeen-year-old Sophia Fox, a senior at Fort Myers High School, has founded HALO—an organization that supports foster families in Lee County by hosting events that offer fun and useful help for foster children. - ➤ AAA reported that on Monday, Florida motorists paid an average of $3.02 a gallon—up 5 cents from $2.97 the previous week. Retailers raised prices as they adjusted to a stable fuel market, and the national average was $3.13 a gallon. ABC7

- ➤ A state grant gave Lee County high schools $1.69 million to create three new workforce academies at Bonita Springs, Fort Myers and North Fort Myers (in aviation, cybersecurity and simulation) while also expanding eight existing programs (boosting skills in manufacturing and health training) for future career paths. - ➤ The School District of Lee County received a $1.69 million Workforce Development Capitalization Incentive Program Grant from the state to create three new academies + expand eight existing career and technical education programs at 11 high schools such as North Fort Myers and Ida Baker to meet local industry needs. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Recent storms reshaped the beaches on Sanibel, leaving sea turtle hatchlings exposed to dangerous light that disorients them and forces them inland where many die from exhaustion or predators. Local scientists and conservation groups urge residents to turn off lights near the beach and restore dunes—steps that could help hatchlings find their way to the Gulf. ABC7
- ➤ Tropical Storm Jerry formed in the Atlantic on Oct. 7 and is moving west at 24 mph. The National Hurricane Center expects it will strengthen into a hurricane in a day or two — no tropical storm or hurricane watches have been issued for Fort Myers. The News-Press

- ➤ Lee County officials approved nearly $300,000 to clear the Ten Mile Canal to reduce flooding in South Fort Myers communities — the project will begin later this month and is expected to finish in about two weeks. WINK News
- ➤ Fort Myers Beach leaders approved plans to rebuild the pier and Lee County officials have asked the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to expedite permits so that construction will begin early next year, pending clearance amid the government shutdown. FEMA has secured about $6 million for the project while leftover pilings continue to pose a hazard in the water. ABC7
- ➤ Fort Myers has approved a $349,969 study to plan a downtown pedestrian mall connecting downtown with Midtown while analyzing traffic, parking, environmental impacts and construction costs. Business owners support events on walkable streets but worry that current parking shortages and delivery challenges will continue if street closures go forward. Fox 4
- ➤ Tuesday, the Lee Board of County Commissioners approved interlocal agreements to use nearly $6.5 million from Tourist Development Tax revenue for 13 Beach and Shoreline projects to maintain beach park facilities and public accesses through partnerships with local, nonprofit, and state agencies + the funding is part of a larger budget that allocates more than $29 million for these projects. - ➤ County Commissioners approved nearly $6.5 million in projects funded by Tourist Development Tax revenue to maintain beach and shoreline facilities, remove vegetation from Ten Mile Canal, extend a Lehigh Acres sidewalk, and acquire about 20 acres for conservation under the 20/20 program. They also voted to purchase four autonomous drones for public safety and accepted a $15,000 grant to plant trees in John Yarbrough Linear Park—efforts that are part of ongoing county improvements—ensuring progress for fiscal year 25-26.
