- ➤ On Tuesday, the Lee County School Board approved a new contract that gives support workers benefits—20 days of parental leave, 3 days of bereavement leave, immediate terminal pay and salary increases, with the changes appearing on Oct. 31 paychecks and additional retroactive pay back to July 1. - ➤ The Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce condemned the Lee County School Board's October 7 vote to demolish the 80-year-old Beach School without public notice, arguing that this decision violates the community's commitment under the post-Hurricane Ian Interlocal Agreement—officials should instead use the $11.34 million in FEMA funds to restore the building and support students. - ➤ A Florida appeals court ruled on Sept. 10 that the open carry ban was unconstitutional, and Publix said it will follow state law—allowing legal gun owners to display firearms in its stores. - ➤ Lee County Commissioner Mike Greenwell, 62, died this afternoon after a battle with thyroid cancer—he had served District 5 since 2022 after being appointed to fill a vacancy and was known for his career as a Boston Red Sox outfielder and as a local business owner.
