  • Gulf Coast Humane Society welcomed Midnight, a 4 1/2-year-old terrier mix weighing 60 pounds who arrived on Tuesday after her owner passed away and is now available for free adoption. The shelter said she is best suited for a single-dog home that needs a calm companion.  NBC2
  • The SWFL Rotary Club sponsored free water-safety lessons for infants and toddlers that began on August 8 and met weekly at 9:30 a.m., with the first class graduating on Oct. 13 in Babcock Ranch. Five local families with children aged 5 months to 2 years took part, and the club will expand the program to other Southwest Florida communities in the coming months.  Florida Weekly

  • Three Cape Coral residents died on Monday night in a crash on Burnt Store Road—county officials and local leaders are urging road safety improvements to widen the dangerous stretch.  Fox 4

  • Stone crab season in Florida is underway from October 15 to May 1 as crabbers carefully harvest one claw per crab to protect the renewable resource.   • The fallout from Immigration & Customs Enforcement raids is hurting small businesses and farms in our area. ICE recorded 10,818 arrests in Florida from January to June— a 209% increase from last year that has left many businesses and agricultural employers struggling to hire seasonal workers.  WGCU

  • Fort Myers Theatre’s production of Shrek the Musical opens today at 7:30 p.m. with Gavin Ott as Shrek and Kagan Vann as Donkey, telling a story about friendship and acceptance—performances continue through Oct 26.  WGCU

  • Lee County flags flew at half-staff on Oct. 21 from sunrise to sunset to honor former commissioner Mike Greenwell, who died on Oct. 9 from medullary thyroid cancer. Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered the flags lowered at all local and state buildings to mark his service as a baseball star and community leader.  The News-Press
