COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Landings will host its first Witches Ride and Enchanted Ball on Monday, Oct. 27 to support Premier Mobile Health Services through donations, live music, and Halloween-themed activities. The festive event is open to everyone and will raise funds for local causes—making it a key community gathering.  ABC7
  • St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church (3751 Estero Boulevard) will hold its rededication service and celebration on November 23 as the main building reopens after Hurricane Ian damage, with Bishop Pedro Suarez leading the worship and a luncheon on the patio following the service. A breakfast event featuring sausage and pancakes is scheduled for November 15.  Beach Talk Radio

CRIME NEWS

  • Florida's attorney general accused Roblox of exposing children to predators by failing to protect its users — issuing criminal subpoenas as families filed lawsuits nationwide — and said the company must improve its safety measures.  ABC7

CULTURE NEWS

  • This weekend, Fort Myers and Cape Coral host diverse events including the 40th Cape Coral Oktoberfest on October 24-26 with German food and live music, a haunted walk at Calusa Nature Center, and comedy shows featuring Neil Simon’s play and Rodney Carrington’s performance on October 24—more community events with local fairs and craft shows are planned for late October and early November.  The News-Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Following a record-breaking nesting season in Florida with 61,708 nests, green sea turtles were reclassified as least concern from endangered by IUCN—this update comes as their population increased by about 28% since the 1970s due to decades of conservation efforts.  ABC7
  • Environmentalists and farmers gathered in Moore Haven yesterday to break ground on the 79th Lake Hicpochee restoration project—a project that will enhance water storage and quality control in the Everglades and is moving into Phase 2 with work planned through 2028.  WGCU
  • The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Melissa is expected to strengthen into a hurricane today but its track and intensity remain uncertain—Florida faces a low chance of direct impacts beyond rough seas and rip currents. Heavy rainfall and high surf may affect parts of the Caribbean while local residents are advised to monitor the latest updates.  The News-Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Fort Myers’ Community Redevelopment Agency approved a $5.6 million rebate for a home ownership project in Dunbar—Towles Garden—and a $14.3 million rebate for a downtown hotel project with 170 rooms. The home ownership rebate relies on receiving $19 million in Hurricane Ian recovery funds from Lee County, and both rebates will be paid after project completion over 18 years.  WGCU
  • Lee County commissioners have renamed the civic center as the Mike Greenwell Regional Park to honor the late commissioner who died October 9—Governor Ron DeSantis ordered state buildings to fly flags at half-staff in tribute.  WGCU
