- ➤ Habitat for Humanity is building a 36-home community called McNeill Village in North Fort Myers to provide affordable housing. - ➤ Jennifer’s women’s boutique in Fort Myers is celebrating its 43rd anniversary with the Art of a Woman exhibit held for free at The Design Center on McGregor Blvd from Nov. 14 to Nov. 20 — showcasing works by Joanne Bedient, Juli Bobman, Tracy Owen-Cullimore, and Nikki Taylor — with all pieces available for purchase. - ➤ The Fort Myers Beach Art Association launched its 75th anniversary Celebration exhibit Monday at its gallery at Cypress Square Shopping Center, and the show will run through Dec. 5. A special celebration today from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. will feature music, raffles, door prizes, food and refreshments—marking a fresh start after Hurricane Ian destroyed its longtime gallery—while new hours support its renewed role in Fort Myers’ arts community. - ➤ Today is the last day for Fort Myers residents to share their ideas on what comes next for historic McCollum Hall on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard—this venue, built in 1938 and known for hosting famous musicians like Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, has been under discussion for months. - ➤ Last Halloween night in Southwest Florida, local groups held many events such as a downtown Fort Myers bar crawl with free drink and food specials, a trick-or-treat at Park Alliance Church, and live music shows with costume contests in Cape Coral, Bonita Springs, Matlacha Island, and Fort Myers. - ➤ The Heights Foundation secured a $2.5 million state appropriation for construction of the $42 million Heights CareerTech Institute in Fort Myers, which will train 500 students in healthcare, welding, and HVAC. Construction is underway and the school will open in fall 2026 — the funding was included in Florida’s legislative budget. The News-Press
- ➤ Pre-enrollment is open for new and returning students joining Lee County schools for the 2026-2027 year; incoming kindergarteners, charter or private school transfers, and new residents must submit required documents such as a parent ID, birth certificate, and health screening. The district has implemented new proximity plans that narrow elementary and middle school options based on residence—parents can complete registration online through the FOCUS Parent Portal. - ➤ Florida Gulf Coast University began building on Nov. 28, 1995, and is nearly 30 years old as it now teaches over 16,600 students and has given out more than 57,800 diplomas; the school will start work on Academic Building 10 for health sciences early next year and expects it to open in spring 2029—spurring more growth in the region. - ➤ Award-winning photographer Andrew West uses a remote sensor camera to capture vivid images of wildlife in the woods of eastern Lee County, including the endangered Florida panther & bobcats. - ➤ Canterbury sophomore Banner Brockington rushed for 567 yards and scored nine touchdowns in the playoff win at Oxbridge Academy on Oct 29—setting a Florida high school record and advancing his team into the second round of the SSAA playoffs.
