COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The mikvah at Chabad Lubavitch in Fort Myers has fully reopened after Hurricane Ian destroyed it three years ago, and the community celebrated its restoration on Sunday (the renovation included a modern filtration system from Israel and was made possible by local and out-of-state donors).  WINK News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Whale, a historic Fort Myers Beach restaurant, will reopen Friday, November 14 after Hurricane Ian destroyed it three years ago — owners Mike and Dawn Miller held a private preview over the weekend to celebrate rebuilding the three‐floor venue with its familiar menu and a new 100‐inch sports screen.  Beach Observer and Beach Bulletin

CULTURE NEWS

  • Southwest Florida theatres are preparing for new shows by relying on small volunteer teams and seasoned freelancers — building sets, fixing costumes, and designing lighting — to keep productions running smoothly.  Florida Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The School District of Lee County has opened a two-week voting period to choose names for the new High School NNN—under construction at 21700 Tuckahoe Road—and for Elementary L, which will begin at a temporary campus in Lehigh Acres. Votes from students, parents and community members will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Nov. 19.  Florida Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • LeeTran will resume its free seasonal trolley and tram services on Nov. 20, offering rides through downtown Fort Myers and Fort Myers Beach. The Blue and Gold Lines serve the River District and the beach tram runs every 30 to 40 minutes from the Public Library to Bowditch Point Park — route changes will improve connectivity across the county.  WGCU
  • Florida state parks will offer free admission on Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, to all visitors to honor those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces—DEP Secretary Alexis A. Lambert announced the initiative. The offer excludes Skyway Fishing Pier State Park while other fees for overnight stays and rentals will remain in effect—visitors can plan to enjoy the parks as a tribute to national service.  WGCU
  • Lee County Sheriff’s Office and nonprofit Better Together signed a memorandum on November 8th to help refer families to housing, employment, and support services before they enter foster care. Deputies will attend training & ride-alongs while working with school resource offices to offer timely assistance.  WGCU
  • Travelers at Southwest Florida International Airport faced flight delays and cancellations as the federal shutdown led to reduced flights at 40 major airports. Officials advised arriving two and a half hours early—connections through hubs like Atlanta, Dallas, and New York were hit by cascading delays.  WINK News

  • The Cancer Alliance Network hosted its annual 'Livin' the Dream' fundraiser on Sunday at The Club at Kalea Bay — raising funds to help families cover essential expenses during cancer treatment — as local survivors and supporters gathered for live auctions, dinner, and emotional reunions.  WINK News
  • Last year, Ashley Zinn faced a rare childbirth complication that nearly ended her life and, after recovering from a coma and relearning basic skills, she is returning as a nursing student on the floor at Bethesda North Hospital—hoping to help others as she was helped.  ABC7
  • Lee Health has opened a new facility at Bimini Square on Cape Coral Parkway to expand healthcare for local residents—Adult Primary Care, imaging, lab services and pediatric care are now available. Additional services including a Breast Health Center and pediatric rehabilitation will open in January.  Florida Weekly
  • Experts say reusable bottles collect germs from sips and touches—prompting Fort Myers residents to wash them regularly with warm—soapy water to avoid stomach aches and allergies. They advise scrubbing both inside and out daily, with a deeper clean once a week for bottles that hold sugary drinks.  ABC7

  • FGCU women's basketball lost 77—51 to Davidson in its season opener at Alico Arena on Saturday. Head coach Raina Harmon said her team will review the game—aiming to improve when they host Ave Maria on November 13 at 7 p.m.  ABC7
