COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fort Myers volunteers from Lee Dental Care, led by Dr. Paul Uliasz and 90 helpers, provided free dental care to 310 patients last Saturday—performing 154 extractions, 58 fillings, and 123 cleanings. The fourth annual Free Dental Care Day by the Smiles for the Community group also offered free food, haircuts, and donated over $120,000 in services and supplies to support those in need.  WGCU
  • Residents in Southwest Florida worry that older drivers may not always drive safely after a AAA Foundation study showed that most adults live seven to ten years past their safe driving years—while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration noted that drivers 70 and older had higher crash rates and Florida suspended 942 drivers in 2024 following over 3,100 anonymous reports.  WINK News

CRIME NEWS

  • Lee County school bus cameras recorded 1,139 instances of drivers illegally passing stopped buses over one week, and officials said that drivers caught on camera will be fined starting December 8 after a 30-day warning period to keep children safe.  WINK News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • With cooler weather arriving, wildlife officials in Fort Myers advise residents and visitors to be cautious as more crocodiles may emerge along the coast—authorities recommend keeping children away from water's edge and pets on a tight leash. A recent incident in Satellite Beach, where a dog was killed last month, underscores the need for vigilance.  NBC2

  • RSW will reopen remote parking for Thanksgiving travelers on November 24; travelers can reserve a $60 spot and use shuttles to reach the parking lot — vehicles must leave by November 30.  WINK News
  • After Hurricane Ian cut off access to Sanibel and Captiva Islands, Superior Construction—partnered with The de Moya Group—formed a joint venture within 24 hours to restore emergency access in a week and complete a three mile, 328 million dollars rebuild two years ahead of schedule. The project won the Best Overall Project of the Year and the Transportation Roadway Project of the Year awards from the Design Build Institute of America’s Florida Region.  WGCU
  • Yesterday, the Lee County Board of Commissioners awarded a $248,002 contract to Superior Builder’s Group Inc. to repair and reconstruct four boardwalk sections in Lakes Park — the project follows a 2024 evaluation that led to repairs on half of the park's boardwalks using county general funds.  NBC2
  • Lee County commissioners approved a plan on Tuesday to build a 10,000-square-foot EMS station and safe room on an empty lot along NW Douglas Parkway to help medical responders reach emergencies faster. The design, costing nearly $900,000 and funded by a grant, will give EMTs and paramedics a home base and secure space for up to 88 staff during hurricanes.  ABC7
  • On Tuesday, the Lee Board of County Commissioners awarded a $1.26 million contract for design services to create the Estero Boulevard SUN Trail, which will connect Fort Myers Beach with Bonita Springs. The 3.25-mile trail will be 12 feet wide—its 18-month design phase is fully funded after the state added $705,783 to the original $555,095.  Beach Talk Radio
  • On Tuesday, Lee County Commissioners dedicated a stretch of Veterans Memorial Parkway in Cape Coral as Captain Daniel Eggers Memorial Highway—honoring a local military hero who died in Afghanistan over twenty years ago. Family members and local residents—moved by his sacrifice—watched the unveiling of the new sign near the Midpoint Bridge.  WINK News

  • In late October, Lee County deputy Curtis Redford saved one-year-old Catalina in Lehigh Acres by performing CPR after she suffered a febrile seizure, keeping her alive until she was taken to a hospital. Pediatric neurologist Sophia French said the seizure is common and typically affects children between six months and six years old.  ABC7

  • Cape Coral quarterback Derek Hooker earned co-player of the week after his Seahawks rallied to a 35—21 comeback win against the Gulf Coast Sharks, while St. John Neumann freshman running back Louves Bazile scored four touchdowns in the regional quarterfinal win over SFCA. Both players credited their teammates as they prepared to build on their playoff success.  ABC7
