  • Seventy-six families in Lee and Hendry counties celebrated paying off their mortgages with Habitat for Humanity earlier this month during a symbolic mortgage-shredding ceremony—raising the total of local families owning Habitat homes outright to 381.  ABC7
  • On Nov. 15, the Pull the Cork wine event raised over $500,000 at The Forest Country Club to support Lee BIA Builders Care’s mission of emergency home repairs and building a new home for veteran Lewis Freeman from Dunbar. Local businesses and sponsors, including Pulte Homes, provided generous monetary and in-kind contributions — ensuring Freeman will soon have a safe, accessible home.  Cape Coral Breeze
  • On November 25, The Heights Foundation hosted an early Thanksgiving meal where more than 300 Harlem Heights families enjoyed a buffet, face painting, games and free karate lessons by National Karate Fort Myers. Each family left with a turkey and a Publix gift card — the event marked the foundation's 25th anniversary of supporting local families.  WGCU
  • Cape Coral Parks and Recreation will host the fourth annual Reindeer Run on Dec. 13 at Coral Oaks Golf Course where the 5K begins at 5 p.m. and the 1.5-mile fun run starts at 6 p.m. with packet pickup at 4 p.m. and post-race activities like light refreshments and free photos with Rudolph.  Cape Coral Breeze

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new restaurant is being built at 1048 Periwinkle Way on Sanibel at the site of the long-time Dairy Queen that was damaged by Hurricane Ian and left vacant for years. The 45-seat diner will serve smash burgers, shakes and fries and is set to open in 2026—promising a retro interior while keeping the familiar exterior for longtime visitors.  NBC2

  • Fort Myers Beach hosted the 35th Annual American Sandsculpting Championships, which ended after 5 days and drew tens of thousands of visitors. Jacki Liszak, her Chamber team, and hundreds of volunteers ran the event, and Todd Pangborn won the Masters Division (with the piece 'Intro Spect').  Beach Talk Radio
  • The 35th American Sand Sculpting Championship took place on Fort Myers Beach from Nov. 20 to Nov. 23, drawing thousands as sculptors competed in Master and Semi-Pro divisions. Todd Pangborn won first place in the Master Division for 'Intro Spect' while Pete Faverio won first in the Semi-Pro Division for 'Still Standing' — vendors, music, and food at DiamondHead Beach Resort — added to the festive atmosphere.  The News-Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lee County reminds turkey cooks in Fort Myers to fry safely by using a flat, open outdoor space and not leaving the fryer unattended, and county officials advise them to let used oil cool in a sealed container before recycling it at the Household Chemical Waste and Electronics Recycling Facility at 6441 Topaz Court—note the facility will be closed Nov. 27 and Nov. 28.  Beach Talk Radio

  • Residents headed to Southwest Florida International Airport for Thanksgiving are advised to arrive early for security as domestic and international flights require two and three hours ahead of takeoff respectively. The Lee County Port Authority offers a remote parking option called RSWRemote on the airport's north side in the Skyplex area with reservations opening Nov. 24 and closing Nov. 30 at a $60 flat fee—drivers should allow extra time for heavy traffic.  NBC2
