  • Downtown Fort Myers is preparing for its annual New Year's Eve celebration with free festivities in the River District on Dec. 31. Streets will close to traffic at noon as locals and visitors get ready for five performance stages, a ball drop, fireworks, and live entertainment throughout the evening.  WINK News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At 9:10 a.m. (Saturday, Dec. 27), a vehicle fire shut down eastbound lanes on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard from Highland Avenue in Fort Myers and caused one person to sustain minor injuries.  ABC7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Edison Mall, named for local innovator Thomas Edison, opened in the 1960s and expanded over decades to house anchors like Sears, JCPenney, Maas Brothers, and Burdines + Dillard’s. The mall marks a chapter in Fort Myers retail history.  The News-Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Traffic builds near Times Square as an inactive light at Old San Carlos (Estero and Fifth) causes backups on Fort Myers Beach, frustrating locals after the holidays. The town is working with Lee County to fix the signal and will deploy two or three rangers in January to improve flow.  ABC7
