  • Cape Coral police responded to a call about a small alligator roaming a neighborhood off Porto Vista Parkway—officers used a towel and medical tape to restrain the reptile before placing it in a squad car and releasing it into a pond.  The News-Press
  • More than 400 people joined the seventh annual Best Buddies Friendship Walk Saturday morning at Estero Community Park to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The event raised funds—each person contributed at least $50—and set plans for a future jobs program to help those with disabilities find work.  WINK News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Historical records show that on February 20, 1865, Union forces including New York volunteers and black soldiers repelled a brief Confederate attack at Fort Myers amid heavy rain and cannon fire. Historians note the skirmish was a minor win for the Union and continue to study conflicting accounts of the event + its role in cutting off Confederate beef supplies from south Florida.  The News-Press
  • Fort Myers dedicated this month's art walk to beloved artist Leoma Lovegrove from Matlacha, who died from cancer in April. Community members gathered Friday night at her Deans St. gallery and remembered how she helped neighbors recover after Hurricane Ian.  ABC7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lee County Tax Collector’s Office is expanding service options to cut wait times as nearly 87,544 Florida driver licenses expire in 2025. A 90-day pilot ended on April 25 (which tested earlier hours at select offices) and staff will review the data and share a full report with leadership in June for future changes.  North Fort Myers Neighbor

HEALTH NEWS

  • As temperatures rise and more people visit local pools and beaches, health officials warn that the risk of accidental drowning may increase. Pool Scouts of Cape Coral will donate one dollar per pool service in May to fund swim lessons, and experts stress that constant supervision, secure barriers, and properly worn life jackets—key steps for keeping children safe—are crucial to prevent drownings.  North Fort Myers Neighbor
